Leg 19 Sarnia, ON – Bois Blanc, ON

We woke up around 9am because Tara’s parents were meeting us in Sarnia to spend the day with us. They showed up around noon and we went out for lunch with them. We went to a local fish and chip stand and then they drove us to the marine store to pick up some more racor filters and festoon bulbs.

After lunch Tara’s mum headed off and her dad stayed with us. He was making the trip down the river with us. We loved having him on board and he was asking questions and pointing new things out. We saw about 20 freighters throughout the whole trip.

As we were coming towards the Detroit end of Lake St Clair we ended up in the middle of a sailing race. There were probably 65 sailboats competing.

Once we got through the race and passed some more freighters we made it through Lake St Clair and into the Detroit River. We passed back under the Ambassador Bridge and the new bridge being built and heading towards Bois Blanc.

We arrived at Boblo just after 5pm and Britt’s parents met us at the dock. We spent some time catching up with them before having dinner and calling it an early night.

The next day we got up and started our day by working on a couple of projects like changing water filters. Tara’s dad helped us and then we decided to go and show him around Amherstburg.

The island of Boblo used to be an amusement park from the late 1800’s to the late 1900’s and some of the old structures are still around. We first walked the island before heading to the mainland to visit Fort Malden.

On our way back from Fort Malden we had to stop at the local bookstore. While in River Bookshop they had a wonderful woman named Jean who was doing a book signing for her novel Battle on the Ice. We bought her book and while she was only going to sign it, she then gave us a 45 minutes lecture on the history of Pelee Island and area. Her Great Great Great Grandfather was George Fox and his home is still standing on Pelee Island. We told her we were thinking of sailing there and she said we should stop in and see it. We wandered back along the gardens along the river and Britt ran into family friends and we spent another 25 minutes talking to them. We had to get back to the island because Tara’s mum was meeting us and we were all going to Britt’s parents house for lunch and happy hour. After a wonderful afternoon spent visiting with everyone Tara’s parents headed home and we again called it an early night.

We spent a total of six days on Boblo. We needed to head out to the East and the wind blew strongly from there the entire time. Our days were filled with exploring the island, stocking up on some groceries and we spent almost every evening with Britt’s parents. The staff at Boblo Island Marina were lovely and they also invited to watch the episode of Still Standing that was featuring Amherstburg. We finally had a weather window that allowed us to move so we said our goodbyes and got ready to head off on the next part of our adventure.
